Yep you do need to confirm the fuses are sound and power getting to them before changing any modules,
some of them are fed from the BCM and others by relays, too complicated for their own good these modern cars.
A dealer will also be able to global scan all the modules for fault codes which can be very helpful.

Guys

I have finally had my car looked at by Vauxhall and it is not good news. They believe the failure of the infotainment system is down to 1 or 2 things - either the radio module or HMI module or both.
There diagnosis is showing two fault codes, one for radio module and one for HMI module. They seem to think that replacing the radio module may clear the fault with the HMI module.
To replace the radio module i have been quoted ÂŁ804 (unbelievable). If replacing the radio module does not fix the issue then they want to also replace the HMI module at a further cost of ÂŁ1100.
So over ÂŁ2000 to get back to working order, which is just madness.

So i have seen online you can buy second hand radio modules (i believe these modules are also called silver boxes, is this correct?).
Does anyone on here have any knowledge of replacing these parts are have a contact that specialise in this stuff?
I am aware of intellilink mods but as much praise as i have seen for them on forums, my experience has not been great.

I have read that with the radio modules they will need to be coded to the VIN code of the car, again i am out of my depth here and any help would be much appreciated.

Personally intellilinkmods is the best route imho. You say you have not had a great experience with them, are you expecting them to diagnose the car over the phone?

If you check they carry a used spare hmi unit and radio/screen etc, you can travel to them and you will more than likely get it sorted at a reasonable cost.

Is the USB socket in the armrest structurely ok? have heard of the early ones breaking up inside and causing hmi module faults when it shorts or whatever.

The USB port seems fines, does not look damaged in any way.

They do seem like they know what their doing, they just never give me much interest when speaking to them on the phone. I guess I was just looking for some reassurance that they know what my issue is before I drive over 4 hours to get to them.

Is there anyone on this thread that knows of someone who can diagnose and repair faulty HMI and Silver Box modules, ideally located in the Essex area?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you talked to them with regards to posting you hmi box to them for testing, it may not be possible but worth asking. You have to take the instrument cluster out to get at it, not that difficult just have to be careful not to scratch things.
Have you checked there is no water damage at the bcm when activating the rear washer, also check no water is in the battery compartment in the boot.

Hi Mate

That could be an option i guess. Vauxhall seem to think the issue may be with the Silver Box though as they have an error code for that module they cannot clear.
They said the first thing they want to test is replacing the radio module which i believe is the silver box.

What i don't want to do is ship the HMI module to Intellilink for them to charge me for something that doesn't fix the issue.

The last i checked the battery compartment in boot looks good as new. Can you explain what the BCM is, where is this located? Tbh i never user rear washer.

Body control module located in the passenger footwell to the left. You can look up behind the glove box from the footwell and check it.
They should be more specific than "silver box"

Excuse my ignorance here. You said check the BCM module for water damage when activating rear washer, yet the BCM is located at the front of the car behind glove box?

Yes the corrugated plastic water pipe runs by it in a wiring loom all the way to the rear washer jet and it can burst and cause water damage.

I see, thanks for clarifying :) Just checked and I cannot see any water damage within that area.
Think i need to find a specialist in Essex who can maybe help diagnose the issue.

SOLUTION FOUND - FIXED!

Guys, thought I would give you a quick update to help the forum.
So I managed to find a guy in Essex who has an unbelievable amount of knowledge when it comes to issues with the Insignia and Astra. After taking the car to him on the weekend within 15 minutes he diagnosed the fault to be a failed HMI module that sits behind the instrument cluster (Speedometer). He had all the tools to connect to the GM servers and recode the HMI to my car. Navi 900 all kicked back into life as soon as the new module was connected - jobs a good'en!
I hope this helps those who are seeing similar issues.

Oh just to add I did have a dispute open with Vauxhall CS and they denied any good will gestures. County Motor works quoted me ÂŁ2100 to carry out the work. They wanted to replace both radio and HMI module as they were to incompetent to know what the error codes mean.

Yet a non Vauxhall engineer had it diagnosed and fixed in under 1 hour - ÂŁ350 all in. Just shows what a con main dealers really are.

sorry to jump in on an old thread but I’ve had exactly this happen - a dodgy usb socket / cable shorted the entire navi - I don’t have radio or able to get screen on. What’s the fix for this? Do I need a new USB socket wiring?
