DPF?

I haven't had my 65 plate Astra cdti (110) for long but in 2 months maybe about 5 times I've noticed a change in exhaust note and the fuel consumption goes up on a short run. When I get to work or home and knock the engine off the fan is also running as well. I gave it a good blast last night so will see what happens. There are no dash lights or warnings when it happens and it can be with a cold or hot engine. My drive to work is through town but going home I go about 11 miles. Some motorway the rest A road at 55 - 60 mph in traffic
Love the car though. Saving a fortune on fuel (had a 220 bhp Saab 9-3 before this)....

Well Vauxhall have taken the dpf light off so wont even know it's doing the nice 1 Vauxhall 👍
Neither my Astra K, nor my previous Zafira B, had an official "DPF active" indicator.

On the Zafira there were a couple of aftermarket alternatives, one being the happy-lightshow that could change the odometer to read 0000DF when the particle filter regen was active and the Pepaz module that was able to show DPF active AND percentage done on a GID screen.

Have found no similar items for the Astra K, but seen some people mount a LED on the heated mirror feed, as it is believed that the car runs the heated rear window and heated mirrors whenever regenerating. I have had a few instances where i am certain it was doing a regen, but i have never seen the instrument cluster "What uses fuel" display, show that the heaters were running, even though someone said that this was another way of knowing that the car was doing a regen.

How often would you expect it to do a DPF regen? I only know because of the exhaust sound and the fuel consumption figures dropping rapidly, Hasn't done it since I asked about it on here. I gave it a good blast to the Lake District this morning then drove normal this afternoon. Did about 150 miles today and the car ran really well

I think it is all about where and how you drive as well as how long. I am led to believe that the regen is all about exhaust temperature, if you get it to temperature on a normal drive then the DPF will clean itself without intervention from the car.
The engine usually gets up to temperature quickly enough in the cdti so I imagine the exhaust would too. Mine only did one regen after I bought it from the dealer where I image it did loads of 5min test drives, hence filling the DPF. Could be what happened with you? A pop up message said "DPF regen in progress do not stop driving" it disappeared after about 30miles on the motorway.
I normally drive for 10miles a trip and then 200miles once a week and those trips seem to negate the need for regen. I think your journey is long enough to get it to temperature. But sounds like it has sorted itself by what you have said. There are some horror videos on YouTube of cars with early DFPs where it has become completely clogged as the didn't have a regen facility, there is a good one of an A3 where the have to replace the filter!!

Hope this info helps, but I would imagine that it will stop when you have cleared it out fully. 🙂

I have 110cdti and when it does a DPF regen the display cluster says that it is in the process of doing one. It shows a notification that you have to clear, a bit like like you would see with the auto wiper warning.

But mine hasn't come on in the last 7k miles!
That is the "last warning" "keep driving" stuff that comes up if you interrupted the regen enough times.

Instead of saying "I am doing a regen, if possible continue driving" every time it will just bite it's tongue until its almost too late and then "force" you to keep driving if you want to avoid an imminent catastrophe

If you do many short trips at low revs, the distance between regen's is lower than if you do long motorway trips at decent revs.

Our Zafira only did one regen on a 1000 miles trip to Italy, but if i drove to work and back (12 miles each way) and then took it on the motorway it would do it a lot sooner.

The reason is that the DPF connects soot particles, when the engine is cold a lot less soot is colleced.

The way the car measures if it needs to do a regen is to measure the pressure drop over the DPF....If there is a lot of difference, then the filter is clogged up and it needs to do a regen.
