1.6T performance curiosity

Post by astrafan » Tue Jun 30, 2020 7:40 pm

As you know I have owned a 2015 110 CDTI Hatch since new in Dec 2015, and after 89,000 miles still love her to pieces. She has never let me down, has mind blowing economy (80+ MPG) and no car could ever replace her.
Out of curiosity I was wondering how the 1.6T petrol compares to other cars in its class? What are it’s nearest rivals? What car has a similar feeling acceleration?
In context the quickest car I have ever driven was a 2010 59 Audi S4 avant auto (5.3 sec 0-60) which really threw you back into your seat. I’m sure by today’s standards that is slow but I was shocked at the forcefulness of the acceleration. In contrast I also have driven an Astra J VXR which admittedly was fast, but mind numbingly dull getting there (I felt that my own K 110 had more of a kick in the back when accelerating!).

It's the old conundrum with turbo cars I guess.

That S4 would be one of the supercharged V6s if I recall correctly... Which offers up more "Instant" power when you drop down and it's that change in power that gives you the satisfying Jolt back into your seat

Turbo cars on the other hand, even when dropping down a gear aggressively will have a bit of lag while the turbo spools up which can kinda cushion the jolt which immediately pins you.

Your 110 feels more kicky and does 0-62 11,0sec or more...
J VXR does 0-62 in 6 sec flat

There´s a small gap between those two on paper :)

The higher output Diesel engine has around 350nm of torque compared to 280nm in the 1.6t. Of course the petrol engine is a lot faster but the extra torque of the Diesel, especially in the higher gears makes up for the lack of BHP.

To be correct:
1.6 110hp diesel has 300nM @1750..2000rpm
1.6 200hp petrol has 300nM @ 1650..4500rpm

How the car "feels" is 100% personal depending on mood etc.

I´ve driven 136hp diesel automatic Astra, 150hp petrol automatic Astra and 200hp petrol automatic Astra. Based on my opinion I´d better go for 136hp diesel than 150hp petrol. Low end response is much better.
200hp petrol is totally superior over them in all rpm range!

I ended up replacing my zafira with the 150HP with an astra with 110HP

When looking at the used car market 1½ years ago, the 110 was cheaper and atleast on paper it had better MPG figures than the 136HP

If i do a weight to horsepower conversion on the lighter astra compared to my old zafira, the astra has about 135 horses compared to the 150 in the zafira, so i dont think it is all that less powerfull and as years go by and the age rises, i dont care about 0-60 times. The 110hp pulls very nicely and has a very decent MPG figure.
2016 Astra K 110HP, Opel Eye camera, front and rear parking sensors, dual zone climate control and heated front seats, sight and light pack.

Please don’t take offence it was just my opinion, I know the VXR is much faster on paper, I just felt nothing physically getting to 60 compared to my 110 which gives me more of a throwback in my seat.

Thanks everyone for your input, I am still curious as to which cars rival the 1.6T petrol for acceleration, Golf GTi, Octavia VRs, Focus ST, Corsa VXR etc?

I've got the 1.6t Astra Sri vx line 68 plate and it's a great car to drive.ive had 2 fiesta st's prior to this car , 1 standard 180bhp the other 225bhp . The Astra is comparable with both performance wise. Mid range is excellent especially in sport mode and will keep up with a lot of 200hp cars. Not as fast as the quicker hot hatches ie focus st , golf Gti , civic type r but better on fuel and more comfortable. Handling is ok but as it has quite soft suspension it's not hot hatch handling but is good enough .
I won't go diesel as its a dying breed these days but on the other hand don't fancy all electric yet.
By the way the other cars that are mentioned above are all 2.0ltr + cars (apart from the corsa) so really in next bracket above.

Thank you Pompey, although with today’s technology engine ltr size is not everything! My 110 Diesel hatch is also an SRi, have you ever driven a J VXR?
