Dashboard and instrument panel failure

Post by James1138 » Thu Feb 13, 2020 8:50 pm

Hi,

I've seen this posted earlier but wanted to create a
new post.

My 2016 Sri Nav dashboard/ instrument panel failed a couple of weeks ago. All the dials died, no speedometer, no rev counter or anything. Plus every warning light imaginable came on. Had to be towed home. Arnold Clark couldn't find the fault as it came back to normal by the time we got there.
It's now happened again, any advice? Has this happened to you?

Cheers

Hi - did you get anywhere with this issue - my 1.4T has just done exactly the same. No dials and every warning light on but still seems to be driving normally. I'll get it in to the dealer in the next few days (out of warranty and annoyingly only went for an oil change at Vauxhall 2 weeks ago) but wondered if there was anything I should check in the first instance?

Thanks - I didn't even get that far as I gave it 10 minutes then restarted and all is back to normal!!!

I did subsequently check the battery and gubbins under the boot floor just in case it had got wet over recent weeks but all seems OK and clean and dry.

Next weekend when I have some time I'll pop the negative terminal off the battery and give it a clean just in case of a bad connection as it looks a bit oxidised.

Not the first electrical gremlin over the last 4 years and 45k miles, but certainly one of the weirdest.

It's fortunate that often, with microprocessor systems, if you shut off the power for a few minutes and then power on again - they often mysteriously start working again.

it is probably even better if you clear all fault conditions shown via the OBD port first, before powering off.

A good practice I was told is to let all the warning lights go out before you start the engine and probably to let all the needle swings etc. complete before moving off.

In my experience of other cars these kinds of electronics failures start happening when the car battery is beginning to die.

Just a quick update on this issue. Although the instruments have worked OK since, I've just this last weekend had another "battery" related issue. I left the hatchback up for a couple of hours while I was changing the front pads, and when I finished the job the battery was completely flat and wouldn't even lock and unlock the car let alone turn it over. During lockdown the car has only been out for a couple of runs but has been moved around the drive a few times, pulling power for starting, but not topping it up properly. Anyway I tried charging the battery for an hour and got it started OK but with a "charging system fault" warning, then realised that I'd never actually cleaned up the oxidised negative battery terminal I found when investigating the original instrument panel problem. So 20 minutes later with the earth strap and terminal now shiny clean I had no more warnings, and to date no more problems! The moral to this being if you find something that looks like it might be an issue SORT IT OUT as it might be the root of other problems down the line 😬

Ive got the exact same problem, has cleaning the negative terminal fixed it still now?

Hi Guys,

I have had a similar situation with my 16 plate Biturbo Elite Nav. In fact, exactly the same issue with instruments. It was returned to Vauxhall's several weeks ago and they indicated it is an issue with software on older Astra K's and required a software update. Update was completed and no more issues since 👍🏻 guessing it was a known fault over time and fix has been software update. Hope this helps. Have video of mine too losing the plot!
