White headlights

Post by Yilmaz » Wed Jan 15, 2020 12:03 pm

I have a Olympic white Astra and the yello headlights just make it look disgusting. I dont want to go through the hassle of fitting LEDS because of the errors I could get.

Which ones should I go for for bright White headlights. Also I love my car but dont have a clue about it !

The colour of headlights is quoted in K (Kelvins)
Standard "Yellow" colour headlights are around 3100K --> 3500K

https://www.powerbulbs.com/blog/2018/01/headlight-colours
In the UK, the law strictly limits the colour of headlights. The bulbs must either be white or yellow. That means bulbs that produce a blue light are not approved for road use. Halogen bulbs with a colour temperature over 4200K are not road legal. This is because the blue colour of the lights can confuse other drivers, who might think the blue lights belong to an emergency services vehicle.

So the https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/philips-white-vision-ultra-h7-4200k-white-twin-box-48177022 is listed as 4200K so is road legal and "less yellow" than a standard halogen headlight bulb. The other one does not detail a K rating so assume it is standard 3500K but is just brighter (more lumen output)

Remember it's illegal in a lot of places to use non-approved stuff like this. Be careful.

For instance, in Australia where I live we can't install non (ADR) Australian Design Rules parts otherwise the car is instantly unroadworthy, and uninsured.

This is a UK 🇬🇧 forum, if you are from any other country then it's up to you to find out the laws.

There's always one! They are mot legal so if you want to continue with the standard shitty bulbs, you carry on!

I think shitty would better suit to describe those low-end chinese led-bulbs that blind every passer by...

But I'm not gonna get in to an argument about this, just pointed out for the OP that those in fact are illegal, if it is of any concern to him. From what I've read they don't check any bulbs for certification at MOT and practically don't give a flick if you have led bulbs installed. In many other countries they're a lot more strict in enforcing those rules.

As to the original topic, I've found Philips WhiteVision to be rather nice, much whiter light than standard bulbs, would very much recommend!
