Advice on waxing please

Post by stc954 » Wed Jan 15, 2020 10:22 am

Hi guys, I have asked around some shops for a 2 stage machine polish with a swissvax wax. I got a price of rought £500 and £700 for ceramic coating with 2 stage ploish. The shop is JPDetailing, has a youtube channel too. Is this too much? The 2 stage polish is because it was once in the auction and there is plenty of swirlls and scratches.
Any opinions?
Thank you

That sounds way to much, I was quoted £150 locally for a full machine polish by a body repair shop and quoted £200 for one from a local detailer. If its just swirls from washes you can get a cheap machine polisher from halfords for £30 and meguires compound for £8 and it did the trick for me. Only issue its a long process.

If you have access to a plug I would just buy yourself a DA polisher and do it yourself. Plenty of tutorials on Youtube and not as hard as some 'detailers' make out.

You can then repeat the process every year to keep it looking brand new.

If the car has swirls just from dirty sponges there is no need to weaken your lacquer by using compounds.
Just use a good SRP with a DA polisher and you will be fine.

Take a look a 50/50 photo from the job I done to my friend's Q5 by using the autoglym SRP

The difference is huge and without harming the thickness of the lacquer as you could do with a compound.

Hi guys,

Thank you all for your replies. I have decided to do it myself, it is way too much for 500.

I just wanted to double check the procedure before putting the wax on, does it go:

1- washing
2- paint decontamination
3- paint prepration
4- paint protection

Thank you

3- washing (to rinse off contamination and products) and drying
4- paint preparation (polishing)
5- cleaning residues of polishing (IPA alcohol)
6- paint protection

If you're going to do all that work, i would think on applying Cquartz as protection. I did it and i'm loving the finish after 8 months by now

Guys I am thinking to do this myself. I am just worried about cutting through too much clear coat.

I have watched youtube videos and I learnt a lot about the pressure to apply, what polishing pads etc... This really doesn't need a professional?

Most of the apint has similar swirl marks like the above. Though there is one place on my car where it is a little bit deeper...

Thank you for all the help

In deep swirls try to apply a compound residue
If you buy a DA polisher you won't make any damage to your clear coat. It won't let you. Just use the correct pad for every application.
after getting acquainted you can go to the next level and buy a rotary.
