Uneven rear tyre wear

Post by Markr » Sat Sep 07, 2019 8:16 pm

Hi

I have a 2016 Astra elite 1.4t
Been to get a leaking tyre valve today & the showed me the rear wheels have uneven wear on the inside of both rear tyres, they described it as toe & heel (there is a stepping wear). The tyres are Michelin. Has any one else come across this ?

I always had this problem with my previous golf mk4 and after owning astra k for 6 months I can already see some saw-tooth tyre wear on the rear. I think the only way to prevent this is to swap rear tires with the front ones from time to time

It is apparently due to suspension geomtery and a common problem on a range of cars. It also causes a rumbling sound, a bit like bearing rumble.

If you can be bothered to re-programme TPMS then swapping front to rear will spread the wear, as mentioned.

So that's what that rumbling is, I had been thinking no way it is a wheel bearing! Mine are Michellin primacy 3 on the rear 22,000 presuming been on the car since new, Just had the fronts replaced with Primacy 4 as there still appears to be plenty of tread on the rear, maybe I should have a closer look at the inside.

looking at the tyre you can see the under tread block is stepped. but also, if you run your hand circumferentially around the inner tread block you will feel a strange saw tooth pattern. weird.

Even tyre wear on the back for me - the car has the Watts linkages, which apparrently take about 80% of the cornering side loading, not the twist beam.

Yes ,mine is the same as Finston,VERY even tyre wear on the rears,I suppose this shows the hidden inherent value of the watts link.

Watts link on mine and I've done 30k miles on my rear tyres and no uneven wear.

Had a good look at mine and the tread seems fairly even on on the rears and there is plenty left which is almost a shame as I do notice this slight saw tooth effect on the tread blocks on the inside where one side of the tread is higher and I am certain this is causing noise in what would otherwise be a fairly quiet car even without the acoustic pack.

Its roads that have been resurfaced with stone chippings that generate the most noise.

Pretty normal, Astra has - 2 camber on the rear.
