Is a Vauxhall Astra a good first car?

Post by hardus77 » Fri May 17, 2019 10:44 am

Hello everyone

I am 22 and currently taking my driving lessons, once I pass my test my dad has offered me his current car so he can get a new one, I was thinking is it a good car to start with? All I know about it is it doesn't have an overly big engine and there is no modding of any kind on it. It is also and 03 I think so it is nearly 10 years old?

Thanks!

EDIT: I forgot to mention is is a 5 gear manual.

Thank you!

Ideal for a 1st time driver , if 03 it's over 16 years old though so may not be the most reliable to run.
Saying that the mk4 Astra is cheap to repair unless major items go when then you have to think how much the cost of repair vs value of car comes in.

I would say its the perfect car for a first time driver. So long as insurance isnt too steep ( which i imagine it wouldnt be)

if its on an 03 plate then i would imagine there are a few dings and scratches on it anyway so its not that big of a deal if you curb the wheel or ding it which is probably likely when first passed your test.

Good luck with your test

The Astra G is a nice car and some say the best built Astra.

Have fun.

The Mk4/G Astra is a fine car. I still remember being amazed by the Lotus tuned handling first time I drove one.

My neighbour has got a Y-reg (so 2001?) Astra G and there's no visible rust on it and it just keeps on running so I'd say it's a great first car.

I had a T reg Astra G for my second car and loved it. A nice big capable, comfortable car. It was an older 1.6 petrol which had some egr valve trouble, but other than that it was a reliable machine.

My first "own car" was a year 2000 Astra G with the basic 1.6 litre engine, and it was a brilliant car to drive for the price I paid for it. It was also roomy and proved to be a reliable companion.

I assume the car is in pretty good shape and been taken care of if your dad still drives it today, so just go for it and enjoy the ride 8-)

A good choice for a first time driver. I had a 1.4 Astra Enjoy(G) from new in 2005 that I ran until last year with no major problems, just required basic maintenance. Really reliable, comfortable and a pleasure to drive.

It will come with a warranty from your dad anyway. He will feel bad if it breaks down and get it repaired for you lol.

Astra g is a great first time car if you ask me, was also my first astra and have always had astra's since.
