Numerous topics have covered this 'issue', the search function is not always helpfull, try searching in google with the following words: 'road noise site:www.astrakforums.co.uk' . In a nutshell, you can put a lot of effort in it by using bitumen and sound deadening mats in the trunk, but this will only lower the road noise a bit and never make it as quiet as a mercedes.

I did a quick noise insulation to my ST last summer and it helped dampen tyre noise from the back. You can check details from my gallery topic.

Have your tyres checked, one of our rears was old and had worn square. The noise was terrible, the mechanic spotted it immediately on road testing the car. New tyre sorted it. You can also buy sound dead in bing kits from eBay for around £80-90

I bought the thickest carpet underlay you can buy and laid and cut it from the rear of the boot up to and behind the front seats. I laid sticky black insulation foam all over the arches too. All of the above shoukd help and only cost around £20 to do.

These kits get it to what the factory would use. I’ve read they make the best noise reduction.

I did the same, and I gotta say it made minimal difference. The biggest difference in noise is made by finding the right tyres and insulate the wheel arches (front and back).

I used Dodo insulation on the boot floor and arches and it didn't make too much difference.

The roar from the rear comes from the boot lid as it's way louder when the plastic surround is off. Insulating this would make a difference and it next on to do list. 8-)

It seems as though both Toyota and Mazda are majoring on reduced road noise on their latest offerings - maybe worth a look next time?
