LED rear indicators

Post by pepe » Tue May 14, 2019 8:51 am

For a while I've been searching for some LED rear indicators for my sports tourer.
Almost all bulbs require an extra load resistor or give bulb out error messages.
I found a French company which claimed to have developed a bulb which plug and play works.
They are not cheap so I was a bit reluctant ordering them.
Last weekend I received them, and they plug and play work without any error messages so far.
The bulbs in the Tourer are BAU15s, I am not sure which ones the hatchback use.
Anyway, for whoever is interested, the bulbs can be ordered on the next website:

Is there a noise in the radio when driving backwards? Nice if it works without problems.

No noise present, works like a charm.

As mentioned, they are pricey and I'm sure a load resistor and a bulb from Ali would only cost you 25% of this price. However, I never felt comfortable using an external load resisor, introducing heat on places not intended (unfounded gut feeling I know).
They have to be shipped from France so expect a delevery time of about 5 workdays (track and trace available).

Just out of curiousity, what is the reason to change to LED's ?

1. They dont save any power as there is a resistor that burns off power to match the original bulb.
2. The indicator bulbs very rarely blows, as they are not used very much and there is blown bulb detection.
3. Ordinary bulbs are way cheaper.

Is it for looks (You can't see it inside the lamp body anyway i guess)

I fully understand those that want to change the rear cluster to the LED variant, as this looks different and gives the car a different look, but simply putting a LED bulb inside the lamp body, would not give any different appearance, would it ?

I guess that at some point there will be laws mandating that all cars must have LED lamps only...Would make sense as EU has made it legal to turn off the rear lamps to save 2 * 5w in the daytime.

Although i have never fully understood the EU and their logic....

EU - From 2015 .... All cars must have a TPMS system to prevent people crashing due to mismatched tyre pressure.

Also EU - There is no need to mandate bluetooth connectivity in all cars.

I bet that more accidents happen because of handheld mobile phone users, than accidents caused by bad tyre pressure. :)

All for the looks mate. Unnoticable to ones eye, big difference to me. Each to their own I say.

Ok, that's fine.

Just wanted to know if there were any "good" reasons that i did not think of.

Looks is a good enough reason for some, but not for me, and as you say, each to their own way. :D

Do you have any pictures?
I always thought it was strange that most of my lights are LED but the rear indicators are not.

I dont have a photo of the actual bulb. I do have one with the bulb illuminated, but theres not much to see, the colour is spot on.
