Astra K 1.6T on Grand Tour

Post by EvilScotsman » Fri Dec 29, 2017 6:08 pm

Hey all,

Don't know if anyone is till watching the Grand Tour but just noticed they had a 1.6T Astra K on the show in Episode 3. Was a fleet car being raced around in a bit of Car Park racing. Unfortunately, person behind the wheel of it didn't put in that good a time, got beat by a 15 year old Clio Cup which was a bit embarassing.

I wouldn't say that its embarrassing, clio is much lighter, has 170hp and its RS version.

Yes, the clio 170 is a highly regarded hot hatch and there wasn't that much between them tbh.

More thinking along the lines that the Clio they showed was a 52 plate so is close to 15 years old and probably won't be as quick as it once was, unless it's had a good overhaul to its engine recently. Given the Astra shown is a 17 plate, it should be a bit more energetic compared to the Clio.

Though, looking up the specs, the Clio 182 is only 1090kg compared to the Astras' 1275kg so a good 185kg lighter.

200bhp now isn't what it used to be due to weight and gearing, plus modern cars use electronic limiting to get traction rather than having good mechanical traction. It has to be said, the Astra doesn't have great natural grip..

None of the current Astra models are set up that sporty either, the 1.6T is just a quick normal hatch, not 'hot hatch'.

What do they do to achive the posted (and rather good) Astra K 0-60 times, I wonder.

Traction control off seems to give sharper response - from what we see on other posts - but what is the point if the wheels just scrabble for grip?

OR

Do they just wind up the engine and then just drop the clutch - with TCS on?

I've given a 0-60 run a go with all electrics on, TCS off and the TCS and ESC off. TCS and ESC gives the best response and I didn't get much spin. I reckon on a proper race track surface (i.e. little loose surface, no potholes, etc.) 6.6 secs would be do-able.

I would also never call my car a hot hatch. Not in a million years. It's quick, it's a surprise to those in Alpinas, Audis, Focus RS's, etc., but it's definitely not a hot hatch.

Put LSD in, lower it and you got a pretty decent hot hatch.
