Towing

Post by Callum15920 » Sat Jun 08, 2019 12:17 am

I'm currently looking to go away next year, first family holiday with my partner and my 1 (will be 2) year old :D , i'm thinking of hiring a caravan and going away for two weeks but trouble is knowing if my Astra will be able to pull a 2 berth van, but before i do any of that i need to know if my license will allow me to tow in the first place i've had a look on the DVLA site and from what i understand (correct me if im wrong) im allowed to tow as long as the weight of my car and the trailer don't weigh over 3.5t (3500kg) :?: , my car is a 1.4T 150bhp Elite, if you need to ask any questions feel free to ask

quote from .GOV site ;

If you passed your car driving test on or after 1 January 1997 you can: drive a car or van up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass ( MAM ) towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM. tow a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined MAM of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg

Thats correct yes.
And it tows great. I tow a 1350 kg caravan with my 1.4 turbo and it's pretty quick and smooth.

Go for it. 😊

just now need to find a decent reasonably priced caravan, also whats the fuel like?, do i need to inform my insurance of me having a tow bar fitted to the car? and would the tow bar void the warranty in anyway with the pin plug being fitted and all that.

The insurance must be informed yes. Warranty should be fine, I had mine factory fitted though so not entirely sure how that works.

It drinks a lot when towing but most petrols do. Diesel is better in that regard.

Just as an extra bit of info for you. As well as the MAM being no more than 3500Kg, the gross weight of the towed vehicle must not weigh more than the unladen weight of the towing vehicle, unless they've changed the rules AGAIN !!!

eg, if your car weighed 1500kg unladen and the trailer/caravan was 1550Kg gross, even though the MAM comes to well under the 3500Kg limit, you would be breaking the law.

Of course, this is not the case if you passed your test before the 1997 date.

Autocar has the Astra hatch at 1244kg - if that helps.

ST at 1275kg with a towing limit of 1400kg for the 1.6 petrol turbo, as I understand it.
