Changing the battery - how to

Post by Gordy » Fri Sep 25, 2020 12:16 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm going to order a new battery and fitting it before the cold mornings arrive. Has anyone done this themselves? Anything that I should be looking out for ?

I can see there is three cables coming out the battery, positive, neg and one other I'm not sure of, any ideas what that is ?

There has quite recently been threads about this, i think the conclusion was that there is no special way of changing the battery. Unscrew the clamps holding the battery to the compartment, loosen the 2 bolts for the plus and minus, replace the battery, fasten it down and put the battery terminals on.

The small wires attached to the lugs that connect to the battery are just, either for local power to something next to the battery, or maybe for voltage measurement of the battery, independent of the thick main wires.

Nothing has to be reset, relearned or anything.

Thanks for that. I tried to have a look on here but couldn't find anything.

The manual doesn't mention anything about relearning apart from Windows. I will give it a go and report back if the car is still working 😂

Remove the negative (black) lead first. Re-install it last....

The pipe on the side is the vent tube that must be attached to avoid explosion. Most batteries have a vent hole on both sides but only one is needed on the Astra so the other side gets plugged.

Batteries in the engine bay don't generally use tge vent tubes as they are in open air.

They vent Hydrogen gas especially if the battery is overcharged or end of life. It’s not a lot compared to older battery’s but enough it could cause an issue in an enclosed vehicle. With the Astra K battery being inside the cabin in the boot it must be vented.

Perfect, thanks for pointing that out I'll make sure to plug the vent tube into the new battery.

Do all batteries have connection for the vent tube or does it need to be a "special one"?

They all have them but some only have one, so make sure its on the side you need.
