1.6T 200bhp - Higher tick over when cold?!

Post by Chris9181 » Tue Jul 30, 2019 1:59 pm

Sorry, it's probably because I've gone from my 57 plate Astra to new engine tech but is it normal for a higher tick over with this engine (approx 1500 rpm) until warm, usually only a minute

At this time of year mine runs at about 12-1300rpm for maybe 10-15 seconds before dropping to sub 1000 while cold.

I'd agree with this, 12-1300 rpm for about 30s.

What I do notice while it's doing this is the engine seems to run a bit rough.

The turbo uses oil to balance the main shaft and prevent movement as well as lubricate the bearings. The high idle is to heat the oil quicker making it thinner and able to properly lube the turbo. Driving before the idle has dropped to normal is not recommended really.

The high idle on cold start up is due to the exhaust temperature being low and the o2 sensor compensates by increasing the revs. As soon as the exhaust gas temp gets to correct level the revs reduce.

Interesting thanks! So do you not drive off until revs drop? I do but I must admit I drive at very love revs while getting off estate anyway
