Mpg not so good

Post by Alt150 » Fri Jul 20, 2018 8:16 pm

I have an astra 1.4 150 18 REG I’m concerned about the mpg it’s done 4000 miles and I don’t really drive it the Mrs has done 90% of the miles and it’s saying 31mpg and the oil is 40% left? The car seems to be running ok but the numbers don’t add up we had a diesel previously and I was expecting similar mpg but were certainly using more fuel

Any help would be great

Your car is still quiet new, may need a few more miles on it before you gain it's true mpg. If your wife has been driving mainly around town, then I'd say 31mpg for a petrol turbo engine wasn't too bad.
I've owned smaller Vauxhall engine turbos in the past, owned diesels for the last 3 years or so. I wouldn't expect to get anywhere near the mpg of a newer modern diesel engine. With your engine I'd hoping to hit the lower 40's on average, eventually. You also need to take the official fuel consumption figures with a pinch of salt. In my experience with the smaller petrol turbo engines, they usually achieve around a third less than the official figures.

Sounds about right if they are town journeys. My trip over the last 5000 miles is at an average of 39.2mpg at an average 21mph.

My cars on 16500 miles.

You won't get near diesel figures.

How long have you had the car? Having only 40% oil left doesn't sound right to me.

In my 1.4T auto which has done 8000 miles I can reliably get 60mpg+ (97+ RON fuels) when averaging 50-60mph.
But around town, especially where I live with loads of hills, I'm lucky to get above 35mpg unless I'm really careful and avoid the turbo.

With the 1.4T you can either have fun or economy, not both!

My car went down to 25% oil in just over 5k.

On my pootle to and from work, 1.4T auto. I can get about 40mpg (depends how I drive, that is taking it steady!). Thats about 12 miles of 60mph road but average speed over whole journey tends to be 30mph-40mph.
Now the past month my wife has been using the astra and Ive used the other car. She has been using it for round town running the baby around. Yesterday I had the Vauxhall email update of this months of recorded stats. 34mpg. So real world will be less than that. Air con doesnt help either.

So I think its about right. It will improve as it runs in but not massively.

I seem to get around 35mpg according to the onboard display and I accelerate hard when I get the chance. It does seem to be improving as the car adds more miles, the time between filling up is a little longer.

The oil life display is nothing to worry about. It's purely a 'timer' rather than having any extra special sensors. Mine is on 10% right now as I'm almost a year from my last service, it's going in for service soon. When the service is done they reset it to 100%.

I get 38 mpg by doing the maths and the computer shows between 38 and 40 mpg. My commute is 25 miles round trip and I drive to make my commute go as quickly as possible

I have had my 1.4T 150 just under two months now and my last calculation was 47.6mpg.
I expected more as I regularly achieve 43mpg from my trusty 1.8i Vectra which is clearly heavier & has a less efficient engine.
Does anyone have any driving tips as the VVT engine on the Vectra allows you to use as high a gear as possible but I am not sure the 1.4 Turbo lends itself to this?

Don't all modern engines have VVT??
