Diamond Cut Alloys

Post by THC_7 » Fri Jul 20, 2018 3:17 pm

I am not into cleaning a car myself (very lazy i know) but i am scared of taking my car to our local car wash.

Has anyone had any issues with car washes damaging their alloys with the jet wash or chemicals they use to clean the car?

I'd be more worried about the damage they do to your paint work.

Thanks for clearing the paint work up!

Can you elaborate on this for me?

Tests have shown that drive through car washes produce less swirls than a badly done local hand car wash would do.
I treat my wheels like an extension to the bodywork. Wax/seal every month makes cleaning very easy.

If you're wanting to keep the car looking it's best, you're best off either doing it yourself or getting a professional valeter in.

Local car wash guys (Tescos car wash type of thing) will end up giving you swirl marks, they have also been know to use too much TFR resulting in etching on paint, trim, wheels, etc. They are also normally happy to throw a towel on the floor and then use it to dry your car off.

Automatic car washes (Tiger wash, Jet, etc.) may not cause as many swirl mark and what not to your car but if they are brush ones, they will normally cause a few per wash.

Ultimately it depends on how much you care about your car. Personally I've only ever had two people wash my car, that was a detailer and myself. But I'm a bit precious over my paint.

My Astra 'J' didn't seem to be too sensitive to automatic car washes (there used to be a really good one near where I live in SE London - sadly, no more). However, since I've had my 'K' I'm very particular how I clean it and always do it myself.

On the diamond cut alloys, I use a specialist foam 'pre-cleaner' (GM- Vauxhall product that came with my car). It appears to loosen most of the crap on the wheels. I then give them a light brush with a jet wash attachment (but without using the jet wash!) and then I finally spray with the jet wash.

The bloke who does my paint repairs (who also does alloys), says he can't detect any deterioration in the quality of the finish and he should know!

I would agree that a supermarket wash or an automatic wash are far more likely to damage the paint on the bodywork than they are the wheels!!
