First of all this is not a joke.
Just received an email from ONSTAR that states that the services of ONSTAR and WIFI will be terminated on 31st of December of 2020!!!!
Nice PSA entrance after the deal. In the letter they say that PSA bought Opel and Vauxhall but ONSTAR remained property of GM. I don't know what kind of tricks are these but many costumers chose this car cause of this gadget. I bought the car on 2017 and they gave as a "present" a 5 years usage of the ONSTAR services. Iam placing the word present in dots because the truth is that this was included in the price of the car, and made the car more attractive for buying.

I hope PSA will reconsider this option and wont make the big mistake for the future of Opel and Vauxhall.

In FAQ the most important things are answered below.....

Q: Will the OnStar auto-response in case of a collision stay active after the expiration date?
A: NO

Q: Will OnStar help find a stolen vehicle work after the expiration date?
A: NO

Q: Will my distributor receive my car related information after the expiration date?
A: NO

Q: Will OnStar still have access to my vehicle data after the expiration date?
A: NO

Q: I have paid for an OnStar package directly through OnStar that lasts beyond December 31, 2020, what will happen to it?
A: The OnStar service will remain in effect until December 31, 2020. Any balance will be refunded to you in accordance with the applicable terms and conditions.

Q: Wi-Fi will continue to operate in my car after 31 December
A: No. Wi-Fi will not continue to work

I can confirm I received this email a while back (region is Eastern Europe). OnStar will not work beyond 2020. PSA are unlikely to buy this segment from GM... otherwise they would have done so already.
Real question is: what can we do with these useless buttons afterthefact? Any thoughts? Maybe Opel/VX will unlock options for example changine the built in module for an aftermarket one, so we can enjoy WiFi (for a fee ofcourse).
This said, we don't even have wifi available here. And it seems we will never have.

Nice....Till now Greece and Bulgaria will be soon out of order. Any others?

Wifi can be solved by obtaining a pocket mobile wifi as I have and I don't need the built in wifi of Astra.
But the anti-theft option, the easy of getting your destination on the go without searching and loosing time on the nav, the accident service and all the other staff that OnStar gives, will be a real miss for me. Already once I used the OnStar SOS when a nice lady hit my car and didn't admit that it was her fault. OnStar sent immediately the police after my call in the correct place without the need of giving address or further information.

The very fact that the new 2018 Astra won't have an OnStar module (and can already be ordered without) indicates that the current shape car won't get a replacement. The PSA similar system will be incorporated once the new Astra (read 308) is done.

This whole PSA buyout isn't shaping up well...

Let's hope they get some of the designers/engineers to move to wherever the R&D facility is as otherwise Vx/Opel will become the new Talbot...

If you read what will be replacing onstar it's same product under a different name so really not losing out
In the letter that they sent to me they don't write something about continuation of the program beyond 2020. Lets hope that somebody else will handle the platform after. For sure I think that this happened, because in most countries they gave this present of 5 years free trial, and PSA probably looses money.

i had been told when i pressed blue button and called onstar that EU will require a emergency assist service after 2020, so this will replace this, i bet that they will offer something like Peugeot Connect, their emergency assist service

To be honest, Onstar is crap! I have had no end of trouble trouble with it. It now only works when I am in the car with the engine running! I have had a few calls to the help centre, who appear to know what they are doing, at the time, but the next time I use it, sod all works! I could only find my car's location, if it was stolen, by actually sitting in the car!! A waste of money in my opinion, so in advance of the cessation of the service, I shall be cancelling it forthwith. My next car ( Insignia Grand Sport SRI Nav Vx Line) will not have it enabled. That's for certain. I love my Astra, but t'aint big enough, so I will let it go with happy memories!

At the new orders the cars wont have any of those three buttons installed. Not ever the sim card for gps signal and wifi.
Just purchased the new Mokka X for my wife. In the new order seller told me this.So we cancelled the new order and we found a My18.5 stocked car with the buttons installed.

I'm not sure I totally understand your argument...

What do you mean by "sim card for gps signal"?
Also Wi-Fi will not work after the end of OnStar.
You do know that those 3 buttons will have no function soon, right?

1.How do you think that you have Internet on the car, and gps tracking? There is a preinstalled sim card for data and call's somewhere hidden in your car.
2. I know that my friend......
3. I am the one who first open this topic so I know it very well by the time GM sent me the info..... You prefer a car with preinstalled stuff inside or a car without these gadgets that cannot be installed after the purchase?. And what if PSA in the future decide's to buy this feature?

1. But, when OnStar ends, you'll not have Internet on the car or gps tracking anymore. These features cannot be accessed (until someone be able to physically retro-engineer it) by any other mean.
3. PSA already informed that will not buy OnStar or give any continuity with a compatible system. 3 buttons will have no function.

1. What makes you think that I don't understand this? Your query before was different.
3. Let's hope that they will use some other platform then. As I explained you before its better to have it onboard than not.

When you bought your car could you imagine that this will happened one day? Anyhow you have already paid for having those 3 buttons on the car.

Hello All
I can only say, that luzing OnStar is a major step backward in terms of security. If a accident occurs and airbags are deployed the car want send any allert to anyone. This means, that risk of dying becauce of lack of help is increased. Actualy, PSA is removing the same service which EU have decided to make mandatory in everry new vehicle in a few years which is the so called e-call. Because og that, and the fact that everry component, or most of them will come from PSA, this is my last Opel/Vauxhall i have bought, and I have owened a phew in the last yers. I can only encourage you to make calls to OnStar and express discontent whith the PSA descision, and not to by Opel/ Vauxhall any more. PSA could have found another solution.

Totally agree with you Splint in the matter of safety. By the way the letter for discontinuity of the program was done by the CEO of OnStar Europe.....not from the CEO of PSA.
All new cars have at least the SOS button using some other platform. I don't care about the internet.....I can use my wifi pocket.....I dont care about getting directions from someone who doesn't know the places in my country or uses a poor searching platform....I can use my mobiles maps or Google maps.......BUT in case of accident or stealing the car ,this possibility was something I'd like to have it continuously. This was a feature other cars didn't have.
Today PSA owns GM, tomorrow some other big company will get the rights.
For today PSA seems that removes those buttons, because they decided so. This is for sure a backward step for Opel/Vauxhall.

All comes down to money psa wont pay what GM want to use the service so we loose out, unless the asking price from gm drops it gone.shame really the tracking service actually reduced my insurance premium a tad which is why I resubscribed after the years free trial along with the sos function

The buttons have been removed as standard as OnStar is not going to be an option from 2020. You can order a car with OnStar but on the understanding that it ceases in a couple of years.
Can't remember which way round it is but I think the Astra has OnStar still but you can have it as a no cost option without.

Just to clarify then, once OnStar goes out of service, why does the Vodafone SIM WiFi stop working? Does it go via an OnStar proxy service? Is it possible to activate it direct with Vodafone once the OnStar finishes? Or can the SIM be replaced with another one?
