Vauxhall 1.6CDTI 136 MPG

Post by xmairix » Wed Nov 29, 2017 2:06 pm

Hi All,

I have had the 1.6 CDTI 136 model (Elite) since June and have never been happy with the fuel consumption. I am currently getting 45mpg (according to the car's computer) however I have worked out my actual MPG to be 39mpg. Surely this is pretty low for a 1.6 diesel engine? I do predominantly drive around town but with occasional motorway trips but even when on motorway the computer MPG only goes up to around 47mpg. Does anyone else have such low figures on this model? I only get around 330 miles before my fuel light goes on/

How many miles have you done since June?
Perhaps engine is still breaking in, supposedly see better economy after first 10,000 (or so i read).

Town runs wont help, your car being a diesel will need an occasional long run to a DPF regen; this only happens when at faster speeds on longer runs during higher RPM. If you don't allow this to happen it can become clogged and affect fuel efficiency.

Other factors such as air conditioning, weight carried may also be affecting your usage.

For reference, I'm getting close to 40MPG in a 200ps 1.6 petrol (admittedly mostly A road driving (15%~ in town). I would expect you to be getting close 60's on a long run or 35+ if in solid town traffic.

Thanks for your reply. The car now has 15,000 miles on it (I bought it a year old) so it has passed that stage. I had a new fuel sender unit fitted a few months back as I felt the fuel gauge was going down far too quickly and it's ever since then my MPG seems to be a lot lower. The car is currently in the garage to have the fuel consumption looked at but I am half expecting them to come back and said they can't fault it. Prior to the new fuel sender unit being fitted the computer was averaging 50-52 MPG.

You must have a problem with mpg this low!!
The engine you have should easily do between 50 and 60mpg.
My 1.0turbo does 44 around town and can easily get 60mpg+ at motorway speeds

My fiesta st does 45 mpg average so as JJ said something wrong somewhere. Have you noticed it recently with the cold weather ? Might I suggest a test drive in an identical model , you,ll then get an idea if your car is underpowered . Those 136 go well , does it feel as if it's holding back ? Sorry for all the questions but interested in why your car is drinking the fuel.

Is it since the weather has got colder that they mpg has dropped?? If it is then it’s perfectly normal as it will be taking your engine a lot longer to warm up...also what kind of driving you doing? Is it mainly town??

JJ , you know me lol .
It's a cracking car , got loads of go but took the wife's Leon to ilfracombe Devon this weekend and it was bliss. Smooth , quiet , comfort suspension and 56mpg - tsi engine , superb. She said did I want it and I buy her a small car for work !
Similar ride to the Sri Astra I reckon - watch this space as have been offered £300 more from ford than I paid for it.
