TBH I'd rather stick with using the same 'gloop' as my dealer will use when servicing as I know there won't be any issues then. Best be safe than sorry in case the engine does go kaput.

This is to let everyone know I contacted Vauxhall when I first got my car to ask what oil can be used and this below is there reply from there tech department
Further to our phone call in regards to your vehicles approved oils i have recieved this response from our technical department:
" Customer can use any of these 0-W30, 0-W40, 5-W30 and 5-W40"
So any of the above oils they say is safe but in my opinion any oil that is Dexos 2 is the best and safest And I was reading an article on 0W-40 Dexos 2 This oil supersedes all the others so this is the oil iv bought and will be using.Iv also seen on this site that another member who knows a lot about oils is also using 0W-40 as he says it's the best and other members also say better protection less wear on startup.0W-40 may be a bit more exspensive but if you want the best protection and plan to keep your car for a long time then think about what you use
This is only my views and it's up to other members to use what they think is best for there engine

That's really useful confirmation and straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak. Thanks for posting!

If I PM you with my personal email, would you mind forwarding that response to me? Although my dealer has verbally agreed to put in 0W/40 Dexos 2 at the first service, it would be nice to have that in writing in case someone different decides to argue the toss!!

Cheers!

I hear what your saying but what if Vauxhall put in 5w-30 when you go for a service and you put in 0w-40 topping up? Your not supposed to mix different types are you?

From my experiences in this area in a former life ;) my understanding is that you can mix oils and oil brands (and viscosity grades) provided they are both fully synthetic and that they're to the same spec (ie, in our case, Dexos 2).

What you shouldn't do is top up with oil that isn't Dexos 2 or is outside the recommended viscosity ranges. That is, if the bulk of the oil in the engine is 5W/30, you can top it up with 0W/30, 5W/30 (obviously), 5W/40 or, indeed, 0W/40. You shouldn't top it up with, say, 10W/40, or 5W/50 (even if the oils with those values fall in to the Dexos 2 category).

:) :) 8-) 8-)

Many thanks!

At least I now have a name to quote from their technical department if there are any difficulties :) :)

I would only put Dexos 2 in, don't worry! ;) ;)

Yes This is your proof from Vauxhall I got this reply on the phone and got them to email it to me so I have proof Also As long as it's Dexos 2 you won't go wrong and only purchase from a Reputable Supplyer as many folk are being caught out on EBay and on the Internet .The containers are genuine. The contents will be the cheapest oil on the market. This has been an issue for a while I got mine from Asda as I know I can go back if there is a problem I keep receipts just as a precaution. EBay is full of FAKE oils so buyer beware

There are "fake" oil factories in Russia actually, they just put used oil in new bottle.

What Oil would I need for a 1.4 Astra SRI (Petrol)
Why do we have to go all round the houses when all the advice you need is clearly contained in the owner's manual? The answer is that nobody reads it. Well what it says is the oil must be dexos 2 quality and one of the viscocity grades 0-30, 0-40, 5-30 or 5-40 depending on operating conditions. For topping up, any of these grades from any reputable manufacturer will do. It even tells you the limits for using other grades in an emergency. I don't know how they could have made it any easier?
