Look at the engine, on the oil cap it says 5w 30 I think. That's what mine says and it's a 1.4 petrol 150.

You'll need Dexos 2 rated oil for your Astra. In the manual you can use between a 0w-30, 0w-40, 5w-30 and 5w-40 oil in the petrol.

I dropped some Mobil 1 0w-40 Dexos 2 oil into my 1.6T as it gives better protection at start-up in cold weather and is thicker with better protective coating at running temp so helps better preserve the engine.

Need to speak to your local dealer to get your hand on one or a local garage to get a OEM one. Though be prepared to be messed around by your local dealer as I was trying to get my hands on a filter from them.

As I believe I may have stated in another thread, my local garage who carried out a 'sneaky' interim oil change for me a few months ago, are able to get hold of a genuine GM oil filter, no problem....

Yes, basically. Although the 0W/40 will give you the best overall protection

No engine is necessarily designed for a particular oil. Manufacturers like Vauxhall / Opel will recommend a lubricant that will fulfil nearly all requirements under most conditions, hence 5W/30. However, that's not to say that another oil won't give you even better protection (although I concede the differences will be marginal) and 0W/40 is an example. The '0W/-' component will almost guarantee that your engine will suffer no wear upon start up (even at temperatures around, say, 20°C) whereas with 5W/30, you will get some wear.

The '0W/-' means precisely that - ie, the oil will perform as though it has no viscosity before the engine warms up and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that means no wear! The ' -/40' end of the viscosity range also means it will give your engine better protection at higher operating temperatures too.

If you look in the user manual for our car, 0W/40 is permitted. Nowhere does it say that you absolutely must not use it, although 5W/30 will be OK for most circumstances.

My dealer said be careful with the oil you use as Vauxhall take a sample for Spectrographic analysis when there is an engine Warranty claim and if it is not the oil that they expect they will not stand by their Warranty (I was going to use Dexos 2 0w-40).

They gave me a litre of what they use - Dexos 2 Shell Helix Ultra 5w-30 - I will stick with that.
