Install dual rear USB charging points

Post by cornishtaz » Mon May 30, 2016 7:25 pm

Parts numbers required purchased from my local dealer
Fascia USB - 13412444 £8.70
Dual USB charging point - 13598459 £31.08

Start by following steps 1-8 in this thread to remove the center console viewtopic.php?f=12&t=95

Install the USB charger into the fascia

Remove the original rear fascia by un-clipping it from the center console. Fit the USB charging housing into the new fascia and install onto the center console.

I still need to find the part numbers for the connector and pins. I was lucky enough to have a connector and pins left over from a previous project.

Seeing as I'm only using the ports for charging I took my 12V feed from the aux socket feed going to my powerflex bar.

I soldered my 2 new wires onto the Black(-ve) and Violet(+ve)

I ran the cabling along the original loom to the rear of the console .

Thanks Cornishtaz - that looks great and I'd like to fit one in my SRi.

Can you clarify this step please: "I soldered my 2 new wires onto the Black(-ve) and Violet(+ve)"

Did you strip some insulation off the existing black and velvet wires (with a scalpel), solder the bare ends of the new (yellow) wires onto the newly exposed wires and then wrap in tape? Or did you find a more elegant solution?

Do you have a part number please for the "Dual USB charging point - £31.08"?

Where do you buy the parts, from your local dealer or have you found a good online supplier? Are they easy to get?

The USB sockets look very close to the floor and likely to get kicked by our middle-seat child. Does the fascia fit upside down to raise the sockets off the floor?

Updated with part number. I had to get the parts from the main dealer.

The fascia and outlet will only fit one way.

I removed some of the insulation and did a solder joint and reinsulated with insulation tape.

Glad to see you pulled the mod off and all that was required was tapping into the 12V. Sadly I don't think many people will be rushing to do this because you have to cut into the harnesses.

I also never realised how much of a difference there is between the colour of the trim and the USB charger!

I have no idea how much vauxhall charge for the replacement fascia and the usb charging point but I would have thought they were expensive.
What I've done is dismantled the centre console as described and made connections in the supply for the charging point. There isn't much free play in the cabling but either solder the connections or use scotchlocks (Just wrap insulating tape round them as over time as the securing clip can work loose.)
I used a dual USB power socket with a waterproof cover which has 2 spade connections on the back - labelled + and -. All i did was drill a suitable size hole where the vauxhall USB would go and bingo. The USB socket was from SINOLEC COPONENTS Ltd priced £6.50 + postage.
It looks better than the vauxhall part, it's illuminated with a blue light and it's got a protective cover.
I used the same method in my last astra J for 4 years with no problems.

It's in the main post

Fascia USB - 13412444 £8.70
Dual USB charging point - 13598459 £31.08

Not a bad mod - I usually prefer to go for the OEM look which is what this post is aiming towards. Is the blue LED not a bit annoying?

Agree with wanting the OEM look but the position of the USB point is hardly noticeable. The blue light is only visible when the cover is opened. The advantage of this is that the socket can easily be seen at night - don't know if the OEM USB is lit at night. In the dark it would be hard to insert the USB lead.

Thanks Gavin - looks like a good option.

Would it be possible to mount the USB socket higher in the panel to make it less prone to being kicked by a middle passenger? We have three kids in the back and I don't want the leads to be kicked by the middle one when plugged in.

Hi UKtekkie,
Only just read your post, as I'm on holiday. The rear panel just unclips so it is just a case of working out any clearance issues and seeing how high it can be mounted. Haven't got the car with me.
