My socket works fine, it can connect to the phone and do AA on screen most of the time (software needs updating for it to work all the time).

BUT...My phone will only "Charge slowly". Which is another way of saying "I only charge at 500mA" and this is barely enough to keep the phone from loosing power, when using GPS, and streaming music (constant data = Transmitter and receiver in the phone is on).

Do you know why that is ?

Have tried multiple cables....Long ones, short ones, original ones and so on.

weak 0.5A output m8 really need 2.4 for data and rapid charge I would say ,

The earlier Astra K's could only output 500mA with USB 1.1. They updated to USB 2 in a later model year with a faster charging speed.

My car is a 2016, is this considered "earlier astra" :)

Can something be done about this (other than botching something together my self) ?

As far as i can see on the picture, it seems that there could be a charging circuit on the PCB (I see a small IC, coil and diode, which is what i would expect from a small SMPS).

Maybe all that is needed is to buy a newer USB thingy like the one that was taken apart and add that one (I guess newer versions dont have the AUX but i dont use it anyway).

Haha yes, similar to mine. I think they changed to USB 2 for Model Year 17 or so but as you said, they then missed out on the AUX.

As for swapping it out for a USB 2 port, not sure how you'd go about that!

Well that depends on where the power comes from.

If it comes thru the USB lead that plugs into the back of the mini USB connector, then there is not a lot that can be done because then the power will ultimatively come from the "radio" and if this is not able to deliver any more than 500 mA then i would have to change the radio.

If the power comes from the 6 pin header next to the connector (Aux in only needs 3 pins (AUX-L, AUX-R and GND) then it would be possible to maybe change the USB socket part with the AUX input for a non AUX input from a 2017 forward).

If all else fails, i guess it would be possible to just bypass the power supply and power it directly from a more potent power supply.

I just can not get my head around the fact that they made it a 500mA power outlet in the first place. With GPS running and streaming radio or music which keeps the phone's radio transmitter and reciver active, drawing a lot of current my phone actually slowly discharges even though it is connected to the car.

On the subject of stupid design decisions, i also find it really strange that the connector for the Android auto is inside the armrest in the middle of the car, in a place where you would normally place your arm.

The problem offcourse being that this is possibly the worst place to get GPS reception.

Must admit that i am tempted to buy a phone holder for the powerflex bar and modify this to work with Android auto.....Yet another thing i really struggle to understand, is not a standard feature as this would be a much more ideal place to put the phone.

Ultimatively, when wireless Android Auto is implemented (Probably never for this model) this will be less of a problem as i can just charge my phone, using any charger.

I wonder if the 2 rear USB sockets, in cars with heated rear seats, also are weak 500mA type.

I've wondered about this issue too but so far haven' got around to looking into it properly. It would be nice if it could be solved by just replacing the usb port with the later one.

The sockets in the rear of the car are more powerful but they are charing only.

The issue is that usb in it's original standard form only allows 500ma when there is data being sent. It is the phone that decides to pull this much current so adding a more powerful charger to the front port won't work.

There are lots of different standards for USB and the there is a newer one called BC 1.2 that allows a CDP port to supply 1.5A and still be able to send data. To pull this much current the charger and phone have to tell each other they are happy with this.

You may find you can get a powered hub that will handle the negotiation for the extra power and still allow data to be transferrd. You'd just need to supply this powered hub with external power.

You may even find that some modern powered usb hubs support this new standard out the box. I suspect that this Anker hub connected to 12v would probably do the job with your phone plugged into the charging port.

What you really need is something like this but smaller with just one or two ports.

They do a slim powered 4 port version too that may work however neither seeem to be currently available in the uk.

I suspect this may work too https://www.startech.com/uk/Cards-Adapt ... ST4300MINI

My Missus mullered hers? Tried to put the angled lightning cable in facing forward (feng shui I think). Bought new sockets of Ebay however the repair didn’t go well. I thought a new one would be dear however it was less than £15 and arrived the next day!!
