Hids might be the best buy but aren't they a MOT failure under the new test, when the car is due its MOT the old bulbs will have to be refitted.

In terms of requiring bright headlight bulbs, and HIDs notwithstanding, I'm always surprised people seem to overlook PIAA:

http://www.piaa.co.uk/

They're expensive, but offer a fairly comprehensive range of brighter bulbs (both legal and 'off road').

I had them on my Scooby and they were amazing; gave a really bright flood of white light with a great beam pattern. By the way, I haven't got shares in the company!! ;) ;)
