2017 1.6cdti 136 whining noise.

Post by Lfc8242 » Tue Jun 11, 2019 10:00 am

Hi guys
My car has a whining noise which is obvious at idle.
The noise really winds me up when stationary.
It is still audible for like a second after ignition is switched off.
Any ideas as to what it could be?
Thanks

isn’t timing chain noise a rattle?

Yeah meant the tensioner . But a whine could come from anywhere , have you managed to see what area of the engine it's coming from ?

just spent 15min with my friend trying to work out where the sound is coming from.
could possibly be from the back but not sure.
my friend described the sound as like an electric mirror/window being stuck on.
the sound starts when you turn the key and before ignition.
could it be a noisy/faulty fuel pump or similar?
The car was in for a service recently and I mentioned it to the garage as well as another problem but they chose to ignore me.
They were more busy trying to charge me for a brake fluid change which took me ages to convince them that the car doesn’t need as they would have changed the fluid as part of brake recall 2 months previously!!

Ok so would you say it's been around since the recall was done ? Or only just started to do it. Just trying to see if related to the recall.

Sounds a bit like the one my car has.

Mine is inaudible at idle but can be heard whenever RPM is above 1200

Follows engine revs, not road speed and regardless of whether the car is in neutral or not.

Mine sounds a bit like an electric motor that is going bad so my money is on the alternator, but when i had it in for stage 1 recall on the clutch i asked them to listen to it and they said that they heard no noises they did not expect so im in a bit of a loss here as to what to do next.

Has done about 7000 miles in it since december and sound does not seem to improve or get worse. I was actually hoping that if it was something going bad, that it would be progressively worse to a point where it could not be brushed off as just the normal noises.
