Vauxhall have officially confirmed that the next-generation Astra will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann said the automaker's 11th generation compact car will be efficient, lightweight and spacious.

Furthermore, the executive said the new Astra will feature "an awesome design" and an abundance of innovations. Neumann was photographed standing next to a camouflaged all-new Astra and from these front angles the car appears to have similar proportions as the current model.

The Opel CEO says the new Astra is a revolutionary car that is much more efficient in all respects. While it will be slightly smaller on the outside, passenger space will be increased substantially. Weight has been reduced "dramatically," resulting in a more agile and fuel efficient car. The executive also confirmed that the new Astra will be powered only by state-of-the-art engines of the new generation.

"The new Astra will once again set standards in the compact class. Amongst others, it will be the first new Opel model to be launched with Opel OnStar's unique connected service that is ready to help and rescue you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year," the executive added.

It looks far lighter and tauter than the current bloated version. Looks pretty good to me in fact. More interesting than a Golf or A3, far better resolved than the still messy Focus and more up-market than anything offered by the French or Koreans.

Vauxhall model ranges are notorious for having a dizzying array of trim levels, and while the Astra line-up is simpler than it was there's still no shortage of model variants to wade through.

From launch there are five main trim levels: Design, Tech Line, Energy, SRi, and Elite (along with SRi Nav and Elite Nav - which, self-explanatorily, add sat-nav as standard).

The bodywork's weight was reduced by 20 percent from 357 to 280 kilograms (617 lbs), which is a big accomplishment for a volume-oriented vehicle. This and various other improves point towards a "more responsive" machine that "corners better and gives a much more direct overall driving experience." Opel Group CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann declared: "Our engineers developed it from the proverbial white sheet of paper," and, from the looks of it, the Astra conforms with that.
