Hi new to forum taking delivery of an astra k sports tourer sri in two weeks i have a question about gps
I picked the non nav sri model and im wondering if i plug my android phone in is there a gps reciever in the car to use with Google maps or does it have to use the one in my phone? Cheers!

Although the car still has GPS, it is for the OnStar.

Therefore, for your phone navigation to work the phone will need to use its own GPS.

I've found it works well using the phone's gps system, even with the phone shut in the centre arm rest.

I was under the impression that gps needed line of sight but if your saying it works then who cares ☺

GPS receivers used to struggle inside a car when I first started using them 25 years ago. Some people installed dedicated GPS aerials while I just balanced my Garmin by the windscreen and connected the serial cable to my Psion 5mx.

Modern GPS receivers in phones are nothing short of astonishing and work extremely well picking up very low power satellite signals inside a car against all the odds. The technology is truly remarkable - just not appreciated as it is so ubiquitous and cheap...

That's good to know it's a shame it can't get access to the onboard gps reciever but by the sounds of it i won't need it!
