I have written to OnStar to see if we can extend our service beyond 2020. This was OnStar's response:

"As the new owners of Opel/Vauxhall have decided to pursue a different connectivity solution, all OnStar services in Europe and WiFi services using OnStar hardware will no longer be available after 31st December 2020."

So, I wrote to OnStar and Vauxhall customer care asking how many people are impacted by this?

The response from OnStar " Due to upcoming GDPR regulations we are unable to share that information."
The response from Vauxhall "Regrettably we are unable to assist you any further from here at Vauxhall Customer Care."

I also wrote to The Motor Ombudsman and they cannot help:
"How our COP's and the law would view this scenario would be that you would need to pursue a complaint against the seller who sold you the vehicle and not the manufacturer of the vehicle. The Law would see whether the vehicle was:

As described: Yes.
Fit for purpose: Yes.
Of satisfactory quality: Yes.

There would be no recourse through the manufacturer, as their only legal responsibility is through the manufacturer's warranty, whereas the vehicle was sold to yourself by the dealer."

My feeling is we will not get a replacement service after 2020 without cost to ourselves by either paying for the car to be re-fitted with the new service, by getting a new car or lobbying the dealerships. Whilst the headline reads Vauxhall will share further details on future connectivity solutions at the appropriate time, this in now way suggests they will be implementing them for customers caught up in this change of Vauxhall ownership.

Hello, suffering brothers in the Valley of Tears Opel / Vaux.

On the Opel' Spanish website has been published this information, I suppose that in many other opel headquarters there are similar notes.
Although initially comfort and encourage our hopes a little, also on the other hand knowing the "skillful waist movements" of OPEL/VAUXHALL, I get a terrible doubt. Analyze it calmly.

question - so how does it track my car? :/ does it have hidden gps box somewhere (as i dont have nav)
ta
It has it's own GPS antenna and GPS module.

I looked at 2 Astra's that were identical except for one having onstar and the other did not.

The differences in the features list of these, with regards to Onstar was :

UE1 Navigation system (Onstar GPS box)
VV4 Communication equipment mobile internet connectivity (Onstar "mobile data" box)

When i bought my Astra i asked the salesman about "On Star".
He said PSA wanted to buy the rights to it but GM refused their request.
He also said all owners will be contacted before the service ceases and PSA will[????] offer an alternative.
They will probably have to change the control box, and make it compatible with the controls already in the car.

But it will probably cost you an arm and a leg to have it fited.

Upcoming PSA/Vauxhall cars will be fitted with PSA current onstar equivalent but from what I have found is any Vauxhall fitted with Onstar will stop working from end 2020 with no plans to update them to use any PSA systems. Onstar is a GM product used across many of their brands it was not something PSA was offered as part of the deal.

And when you call up the PSA version, you will only get this

This is simply not true. Vauxhall/Opel did not confirm neiter denied. Based on answers given by Opel representatives worldwide customers have to wait for further information. I would expect they will offer a hardware migration option but not without any cost. Obviously.

It's true according to what I have been told by Vauxhall. Onstar was not sold with Vauxhall so PSA have no rights to use it after the cut off date. PSA have stated that they will not be supporting Onstar as it was not part of the deal..

Not sure what is not true about that tbh.... ??

But PSA could just take the box they put into new cars now, and make a wiring harness that will plug into the existing harness in the car and then this unit.

Onstar would only require power, aerial, and connection to a few control buttons and lights in the ceiling of the astra.

But as previously said, the box and harness is probably gonna cost silly money to have retrofitted.

That's the danger of using very long sentences ;) I'm not talking about OnStar. This is inderdeed a GM product/service.

I'm talking about this part:
"with no plans to update them to use any PSA systems."

There is still some chance that existing owners could use the new Opel/Vauxhaul Connect system.

Atleast in my country, the Onstar was something you had to select, and that cost money to get, just like DAB radio, Intellilux headlamps and so on.

Those who paid, must feel real stupid, for paying for something that was discontinued so fast.
