What a load of whingers! All we've heard about Onstar up to now is what a waste of money, the advisors are worse than useless, now people are threatening suicide if it's not available! Who are they anyway? Never heard of them before I got this car, so who's bothered? My take is that PSA are no longer going to use Onstar to provide the service, not that it won't be available at all. I'm assuming they'll choose a different provider after 2020. It's like Vodafone announcing they're pulling out of mobile phones. What would you do, commit suicide or just move to another provider? Can't believe some of the comments being made.
I find your comments rather offensive. Not everyone has said Onstar is a waste of money. I personally use it and have paid for it and my wifi in the car. I bought and paid for a car with these services and I expect them to continue because that was one of the reasons for purchasing the car. The fact that we have been given notice until 2020 is neither here or nor there. In fact in some ways for me the notice is only 2019 because I bought the car in April. I don't want to buy a year's worth of wifi which is only usable for 8 months. However, I want wifi in my car and I have paid for facility by my purchase of the car. There may well be a replacement announced BUT we have been told this by Onstar, NOT PSA who bought the Vauxhall brand, and as an ex Service Manager (in a completely different field) I find that appalling treatment of their customers. I'd expect to be sacked for that. As to your comment that most of us would be on different cars by then - well whoopy do - what about those of us who probably won't. I expected to keep this car for some time, - it may well be the last car I ever buy and I want and expect it to have the services I paid for. Hopefully they will - but a little respect for their customers and actually tell us what is going on and what the plans are, are the least we should expect.

Hello suffering owners of an opel / vauxhall, greetings from Spain. I've gone through your forum, to see your reaction to the news.
And I see that you have not saved ... nor with the Brexit ... ;)

"My take is that PSA are no longer going to use Onstar to provide the service, not that it won't be available at all." :?

Opel Pirates Answer:
"OnStar services will no longer be available after 31st December 2020...."
or
"No. All OnStar services in Europe and WiFi services using OnStar hardware will not be available after 31st December 2020."

" It's like Vodafone announcing they're pulling out of mobile phones"

Oh yes! Nokia did it. ... It is possible that this is bought by Microsoft ... OMG!

"What would you do, commit suicide or just move to another provider?"

Oh Good Heavens!!... I will give my Opel to the Salvation Army and I will buy three or four Mercedes (without motor renault, of course!!)

So, the official press releases as reported in AutoExprerss and Carbuyer, and on the Vauxhall website highlights:

1) "OnStar's emergency call SOS functionality will cease to operate from 31 December 2020, as Vauxhall says that "OnStar Emergency Assistance services are not eCall services for the purposes of the eCall Regulations."
This, to me, gets PSA/Vauxhall nicely out of any legal obligations on the 2015-2017/18 models sold with the Onstar concierge service, which included an automatic crash response system, as the European laws mandate that only all new cars sold since March 2018 must be fitted with eCall. What eCall functionality do the new models have?
Onstar is owned by General Motors (who sold Vauxhall to PSA), so I assume they must be closing their UK operation in 2020, hence why we cannot use them directly after 2020.

2) Vauxhall pledged that it "remains fully committed to its well-established role as a leader in connectivity services", adding that it will share "further details on future connectivity solutions at the appropriate time."
So PSA/Vauxhall seem happy to leave their customers who purchased cars before or after their takeover hanging indefinitely about any future solutions?! This hardly screams 'role leaders in connectivity services!' We don't know if they will pay for any changes required to our vehicles or the cost of any new service going to be offered.

Though it's a concern that it's stopping like said earlier it's 2 1/2 years away, things might be in place by then to upgrade to a newer system offered by PSA. With technology and connectivity moving so fast in 2 1/2 years the system us guys have will probably be old hat and easy replicated by other means.

Opel, The great brand that went through the door of oblivion.

Yes, it is true, there're still 2'5 years left ... of course if we see it from another point of view ... our cars will be two and a half years older (plus the previous time) ... that's, they will be in the fair limit of making a decision on amortization:
Or sell it (a car with serious faults in electronics at that time) cheap.
or you stay with it until everything crashes down in pieces (a car with serious electronic faults and outdated with respect to his time).

what could happen with electronic sistem?:

A - I hope that, when the time comes (it won't be sooner than you expect), PSA will study, develop, implement an update to a system that, at first they haven't designed, and that they won't do for the sake of it. You will have to pay something. isn't that so!? How much does it hurt?

B - Recall that the computer system in two years is old and in four, obsolete, therefore: What update we hope to introduce into a four-years old system.

C - On the basis of what rule do you suppose that PSA is forced to ... what?

FINAL NOTE: Prepare a crowdfunding to sponsor a hacker ... because I don't see another solution.

Still doesn't seem to mention what will happen to existing Onstar users after 2020. I'm beside myself!

Hi all,

I have the vehicle on a 4year lease that goes beyond the 2020 deadline. I have spoken to vauxhall they do not want to know. Spoke to Drive Vauxhall they havent got a clue as to whats going on.
I have also spoken to GMAC who have opened a complaint and will let me know in a weeks time as to what can be done (hoping they can do something about this) my only suggestion to all would be to raise a complaint with GMAC as they seem like the only entity that care about customers. (Thats if you have the vehicle on lease)

Speaking to Vauxhall i can confirm that there will be an alternative to Onstar but it will not be avaliable for our OLDER vehicles. It will only be for the new ones coming in from 2020.

If Onstar comes to a halt its going to effect the security of the car. Like i said if you have the vehicle on lease raise a complaint with GMAC because if greater number of people do that then even GMAC can have a clear picture as to the knock on efffect this will have to us as consumers.

I'm still waiting for a response to my complaint but I'm getting the same impression. If Vauxhall Motors and my dealership officially respond to my complaint with shrugged shoulders, I'll take it to the motor ombudsman. Not prepared to accept loss of the service when I've paid to have the option fitted.

Thanks for the advice and I spoke to vauxhall customer service they told me there's nothing yet but there could make older cars that had OnStar available with the new service

Hi danh23 im sorry i cannot quote im very bad with phones lol
But ive asked them to send me a copy of my conversation with vauxhall where they have clearly said there is nothing in the pipeline for older models. At first the advisor (she was the very defination of incompetent) said the same to me until i asked them to send me the information in writing.
After which the manager was in the background listening to the conversation and tgeir tone changed. Lol they started stating silly things like onstar is not covered by waranty blah blah blah lol they really dnt have a clue as to whats going on. But im not willing to wait for something to happen unless they can give me it writing that they will do something for us.

Geekonthepc i agree with you. I actually really enjoy using the Onstar i still buy data packages. I spoke to a legal advisor from RAC (still have a membership with them for reasons unknown to me lol) , now i dnt know how good they are in terms of advice but she did state that by them stopping the service there is a breach in contract. But i will wait for the finance company to get bak to me

Maybe it's just me but as far as I can see we're running GM manufactured cars with a GM concierge service on board. Unless GM are shutting down OnStar in Europe due to the sale to PSA, then those of us with GM cars with all GM parts should still have access to a GM service?

I suspect they will shut down the OnStar service in Europe as they won't be selling any cars over this side of the pond.

Hi

The email I had was pretty specific that onstar would end 31/12/2020.

OnStar services and Wi-Fi services enabled by the OnStar connection (if available in your country) will cease to be available for Vauxhall cars on 31st December 2020

Cheers

Paul

I have spoke to someone at my local dealership and they said as far as they know onstar will continue and you'll just pay onstar for the service as onstar it's self is not going anywhere.
That's strange as Vauxhall told me any cars brought before 2019 won't continue with onstar after 31 Dec 2020 cars brought from 2019 will have the new service

I wasn't aware onstar Europe was closing I thought it was just the vauxhall deal with them.
There must be hundreds of thousands people effected
Guess ownership yes, staff not so sure how big it is in Europe

Would love to know the figures of who uses and renews subscriptions of Onstar, I work with two guys who have it fitted to their new cars and never even registered it. Me personally have used it once for help in 8 months of ownership and it was no use at all, but yes I was planning on renewing it.
