Hi

Wife's car, watched her driving off this morning and after reversing off the driveway she heads off down the road leaving a cloud of black and grey smoke. It's a mild morning so there was no vapour. Just this diesel-like cloud.

I haven't read the codes yet, and I did search and didn't find anything. Is this a known issue? The engine uses no oil as far as I can discern. In fact I did think overfueling rather than oil burn smoke.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

wouldn't worry too much as mine does this too...one of the issues of direct injection, its even mentioned in an article on the internet somewhere that manufacturers may even put DPF's onto DI engines to stop the black particles

Forgot to state it only does this when it is from a cold start and not up at operating temperature
Thanks. Yes, same. An MOT tester friend has suggested checking secondary air injection if fitted.

Going to have a look and possibly video this morning when it starts.

I forgot that I noticed an oil leak underneath the engine, from filter area, must check that out. Unlikely to be related of course but I'll get it back to VX for a look.

looked at my exhaust yesterady and its pretty black aswell. it also has something to do with direct injection and no dpf filter
Exhaust pipe sooty? In which case yes, somewhat normal although on my non turbo 6pot petrol which has direct injection a black sooty tailpipe is a sign the injectors are leaking. When it's running properly it looks clean and you only get trace amounts of black if you "rim" the pipe. Ooer.

Or do you mean "exhaust" as in the emissions from the tailpipe and you are seeing black smoke? I don't believe we should ever see black smoke from a petrol unless something is wrong, it's a sign of over fueling. My image shows a blue tinge too. Personally I think the turbo is leaking oil into the exhaust.

I've got it booked into EvansHalshaw on Friday. They are my local VX dealer. If it turns out to be normal I'd say that's pretty bonkers. I've never owned a diesel because of the soot etc. If modern TGDI engines emit this much crap this is a scandal waiting to happen. No wonder the air quality is so bad.

BTW the actual video is much worse than this. It's horrible. I can't post because it has the reg number.

Speaking to a MOT tester mate he sees this a lot with modern petrol engines. Reckons it's something to do with getting cat up to temp quickly. Computer dumps lots of fuel into exhaust. Hence the black smoke.

Anyone familiar with that? I've not read the manual for this car but I doubt it says "don't worry about black smoke".

EVANS HALSHAW....wouldn't even waste your time taking your car to them for warranty work....they will say it is normal even if it isn't...it is well known they wont sort anything without a fault code....have you got a JCT600 near you or another dealer, if you have you would be far better taking your car to them

Does anyone have an astra 1.0T that spits out crap like in the video ?

Evans Halshaw is where we bought it from. They've done warranty work already and seemed to do a good job. Edit but yes I'm aware of their awful reputation. I found them a lot better than BMW sytner though.

Jct600 seems to be an up north thing. I'm in Wales.

Dropped the car off. Showed tech the video and he said it didn't look right and they are getting a lot of problems with the 1.4T engine and cracked pistons resulting in misfire. He said it also affects the 1.0T on cylinder 3 but he didn't think it was that. Engine is running fine so I don't think it's anything as serious as that.

Will report back either way.
